On December 31, 2024, a fire broke out on the Telegraph Cove historic boardwalk, destroying multiple buildings, including the beloved Whale Interpretive Centre. The WIC's entire collection was lost. Despite the fire, the heart of the WIC remains and rebuilding efforts are underway, speared forward by its dedicated community. (from the WIC's website)

As we approach the first anniversary of the Telegraph Cove fire, I wanted to create something special to help raise much-needed funds for the Whale Interpretative Centre's rebuilding efforts. The WIC is a special place where, for many years, passionate people shared their knowledge about whales and marine mammalssparking visitors' interests and curiosity about these amazing creatures. Work is currently underway to rebuild this educational space, however more funds need to be raised for this to happen.

Please join me in supporting this work by sending them a donation directly or by purchasing my fundraiser print. I am donating 100% of profits from this print to the WIC rebuilding project.

About this Print

I created the original image by drawing with ink, watercolour and char collected from the remanence of the Whale Interpretative Centre. The drawing was then re-produced as a digital print, which I have hand-embellished by gluing additional WIC charcoal onto the two orcashighlighting their faces and allowing the char to dissipate down their bodies. Each print is slightly different and unique because of this alteration.

These two killer whales represent this transitional time for the WIC. They embody a hope for the future, a sense of continuation and a resilience of spirit. The lower killer whale is drawn as a flaming phoenix while a water-orca ascends and rises above. The added charcoal created layer of depth and meaning as well as visually provides texture and a glistening quality.
