This giclée print, Háhyrningur (North Atlantic Killer Whale Type 1), belongs to a series of drawings I created during an artist residency along the shores of Northern Iceland. The series feature various species of whales from Iceland and are made using pen and ink. As part of my artistic process I allowed natural elements such as freezing winter weather and water from the Denmark Strait to manipulate the drawing. By incorporating these natural forces and elements of nature the drawing teeters between certainty and chance, representation and abstraction. The word "háhyrningur" is Icelandic for orca.
I had this drawing critically scanned to accurately reproduce the small details and subtle changes of colour. It was scanned and printed locally using high quality materials. They are printed with pigment-based inks on smooth watercolour paper (100% cotton). This print is a limited edition of 20. Each print is numbered (i.e. 08/20), titled, signed and dated on the white border just below the image as well as on the back of the image (should you want to trim the white border to frame as an 8 inch x 10 inch piece). It is archivally packaged with an acid-free matboard backing and sealed in a UV protective sleeve.
Image size: 8 inches x 10 inches
Paper size (including boarder): 10 inches x 12 inches
Write-up included with artwork:
This drawing was created using ink, winter weather and seawater from the shores of northern Iceland (from the Denmark Strait). This drawing is part of a larger body of work, the Dissolve series, that explores the connection between cetacean and water. As the seawater interacts with the ink, it separates and creates natural currents, eddies and patterns across the drawing. Seawater is a complex medium—containing small pieces of plants, microorganisms, plankton and salt. As the water dries it leaves behind a record of this process and the drawing becomes a specimen of the whale’s environment.
This giclée print was professionally printed on 100% cotton, acid-free, archival watercolour paper using archival, pigment-based inks. Háhyrningur (North Atlantic Killer Whale Type 1) is a limited edition of 20 prints."
